The crew of Eagle 7, the World War II veterans who rode an experimental tank into battle and took out a deadly German tank in the Battle of Cologne, were awarded Bronze Star Medals for their service 74 years after the battle. Only one, Clarence Smoyer, 96, of Allentown is still alive to accept the honor during a ceremony Wednesday at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The family of the other three crew members accepted the medals on their fathers’ behalves. Here is what they had to say about the honor.
