Trexler Trust awards nearly $5.8 million to Lehigh County charities

The Harry C. Trexler Trust announced nearly $5.8 million in grants to Lehigh County charities and the city of Allentown.The trust, established by Allentown’s best-known philanthropist, is one of the Lehigh Valley’s leading private foundations. In 85 years of distributing grants, more than $160 million has been awarded to support Lehigh County nonprofits and the Allentown park system.As stipulated by Gen. Trexler’s will, Allentown this year received the largest single allocation: $1.9 million to support its parks.After extensive review from the trustees, 89 nonprofits were awarded a total of $3.86 million, in addition to the $1.9 million awarded to Allentown.“During the past year, the Trexler Trust initiated a 100-Day Challenge to the selfless service providers aiding our homeless neighbors. Their intensive work and dedication not only helped 63 people exit homelessness, it also prevented 46 households from becoming homeless — all in a very short time-frame,” attorney Malcolm J. Gross, Trexler trustee and chair for the 2018-19 fiscal year, said Thursday in a news release. “We are indebted to their service and grateful that they continue to work together as a group committed to preventing homelessness.”The changing nature of our community brings with it new needs requiring new ways to meet those needs,” Gross said. “Lehigh County’s charitable organizations are eager to meet those challenges and the Trexler Trust is privileged to provide resources for their work.”Including the award to Allentown, the percentage of funding for parks and recreation was 35 percent of the total awarded, or $2 million. Programs and services for the disadvantaged received $1.4 million, or 25 percent. Organizations in the cultural category received $770,500 or 13 percent.Educational programs were awarded $762,000, or 13 percent. Programs and services for youth received 8 percent; health care services and programs for seniors received 6 percent.Some of the larger grants included:Allentown Art Museum, $150,000, to support community-based programs and engagement initiatives. The museum also received $80,000 to underwrite its operating expenses.The Boys and Girls Club of Allentown, $100,000, toward the swimming pool improvement project. The organization also received $75,000 to underwrite program costs of the Make Your M.A.R.K. program for children of the Allentown School District.Communities in Schools of the Lehigh Valley, $150,000, to support expenses to deliver programs in the Allentown School District.DeSales University, $100,000, third installment for capital support.Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, $100,000, first installment on $200,000 grant for capital support to modernize the Rehabilitation Hospital.Greater Valley YMCA, $100,000, for operating support for the Allentown branch serving Lehigh County residents. The YMCA also received $75,000, for capital support of the Wellness Center in the Allentown facility.Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley, $100,000, to underwrite the cost of Tacoma Street homes for Lehigh County families.Pinebrook Family Answers, $100,000, to underwrite operating expenses for services to Lehigh County residents.Sacred Heart Hospital of Allentown, $150,000, to support the faith-based Nursing Program in Allentown.The Salvation Army, $175,000, to underwrite operating expenses of the Allentown Corps.
