Like many homes across Allentown, the 10 homes that were destroyed during an Oct. 20 fire on North Fountain Street in Allentown had features that made them susceptible to a rapidly spreading blaze. Also like the Fountain Street homes, about 40% of Allentown’s housing stock was built before 1920, long before modern codes and building materials existed.
