Visitors to the Lehigh Valley Zoo may spy a baby bison on their way to the park while driving through the Trexler Nature Preserve. The female bison was born May 7 and likely weighed between 30 and 70 pounds at birth, according to zoo officials. The baby will be easy to spot with its reddish-brown fur that will darken as she ages.Bison are the largest mammals in North America, with males weighing as much as 2,000 pounds, standing up to 6 feet tall. The newborn won’t get that large. She will likely max out at about 1,000 pounds and stand between 4 and 5 feet tall. The Trexler Nature Preserve was designed with bison, elk and white-tailed deer in mind. Bison were in the midst of a serious population decline in the 19th century. When Henry Trexler established the preserve, he wanted to be a part of the effort to bring the species back from the brink. The species is now considered near-threatened.Morning Call reporter Sarah M.
